Did you know the suburb of Margate in Redcliffe got its name from an English seaside resort? Yes, it’s named after Margate, a town on the Isle of Thanet in Kent, England.
Originally called Meregate back in 1254 and later renamed Margate around 1293, the name means 'a pool gate or gap in a cliff where pools of water are found'.
The Margate beaches in England were among the first seaside resorts, complete with all the classic fun activities like sandcastles and donkey rides.
Back here, the name ‘Margate’ first emerged on the Redcliffe Peninsula in the 1880s to name a new estate subdivision.
Over time, Margate became one of the townships on the Peninsula that grew into a full-fledged suburb. It was often called ‘Margate Beach’ too.
Fast forward to 1970 there was a bit of a debate in the council about the names of Redcliffe suburbs, specifically whether to drop the word ‘Beach’ from 'Clontarf Beach' and 'Margate Beach'.
They actually put it to a vote and Mayor Ald Kroll with his deciding vote chose to drop it. The suburbs were renamed Clontarf and Margate pending approval by the Place Names Board.
The Queensland Place Names Board gave the green light to these names for the city of Redcliffe in 1971.
