North Lakes is a pretty fresh face in the Moreton Bay Region. This suburb, a blend of residential and commercial zones, kicked off in April 1999. It’s now packed with more than 72000 residents!
The development was driven by commercial giants Lend Lease and Lensworth all under the watchful eye of the then Pine Rivers Shire Council. The suburb is bordered by Mango Hill and Rothwell to the east.
Let’s rewind over 130 years ago. A sergeant from the Humpy Bong police force, named Alexander Campbell, picked out the land that North Lakes covers today, originally using it for farmland.
He wasn’t around much though basically just grazing a few cattle and building a modest place to stay. In 1883, he sold off his land to a real estate agent and developer from Brisbane who divided it up into smaller plots calling the area Campbelltown.
Fast forward to the 1930s and the Kinsella family were running a big dairy farm near what’s now Kinsella’s Road East part of the northern section of today’s North Lakes.
Down southeast Norman Meyers was busy expanding his pineapple plantation well into the North Lakes area sticking around until the 1960s. The land demand started heating up when the Australian Paper Manufacturers Mill set up shop in Petrie. Throughout the 1970s, this company planted a ton of slash pine trees in North Lakes, using them to boost their paper production.
By the early 2000s, as the paper mill began dialling down its operations the stage was set for the North Lakes development to really take off, including the addition of North Lakes Westfield. And now here we are with North Lakes being one of the most visited places in the Moreton Bay area, boasting a vibrant community and a dynamic mix of homes and businesses.
